If you look at the recent maps it is clear he is trying to take the entire coastline of Ukraine so it will be landlocked. Mariupol is key to taking the south, it also checks on of the boxes and reasons Putin has stated for invading (Azov nazi). Were Ukraine able to extract its reserves of gas and oil it would become Europes second Petrocountry and therefore a direct threat to Putins government which about 30% of its income comes from selling gas/oil to europe and the world. The border issue is a long standing issue, this all started when the pro-kremlin government was overthrown plunging the country basically into civil war in the dombass.

1. He wanted to prevent a Ukranian invasion (Russians found plans to invade Donbass. If you don't believe me, ask why all of the Ukrainian forces are on the Eastern border)
2. He wanted to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. NATO has been slowly inching towards Russia over the past almost century now. Russia cannot afford to have a huge alliance of countries right on their border. They also don't want to give NATO the first strike in case of nuclear weapons being used.

Also, the Russians despize the Nazis for historical reasons.
3. He wanted to get rid of the biolabs which were suspected to be developing bioweapons. Outbreaks of serious diseases developed near some of these biolabs.
4. Numerous other nasty things that the West has been doing undercover. Can't think of any specific examples, but keep an eye out for surprises that the Russian Ministry of Defense finds in the upcoming months.

Ukraine has 3 areas with natural gas Crimea, the east and west. But also buffer zone.
The west did nothing when he invaded Crimea and Georgia so probably believed that they wouldn't react again. But now that failed at a fast take over he becomes more aggressive because he can't show to his people that he's weak. Don't be surprised if he takes things too far if especially if he doesn't take Mariupol fast

The maps I've seen have shown a front extending across the entire east. It seems to coincide with the roads the russians are using for logistics. It doesn't seem clear at all, to me at least, what exactly he is trying to do other than just roll through from E to W
