Just because I wasn't sure if this was posted in the last thread or the one before, I'll post it here instead. Basically, current Russian doctrine means they simply CAN'T have good military leadership because they could challenge Putin or the FSB, the they're constantly decapitated.
The troops both in the field and the ones that have been captured are all basically saying the same thing- none of them had any idea what the fuck was going on until they crossed the border, and most still don't. Putin fell for the same 'kick in the door' meme that Hitler did. He thought that if he marched in with his entire army, Ukraine would run up the white flag and the world would give a collective 'meh'. So his troops were poorly organized, poorly equipped, and poorly motivated.
They're getting better, now, now that they're aware they've been sent into a shooting war and not on a 'special military operation'. But it's slow going. This is alot like the Winter War. Stalin sent his army headlong into Finland and got absolutely fucking bent over. Humiliation on the world stage as Russia gets shitcanned by a smaller, outgunned enemy (which, ironically, is what gave Hitler the idea that invading the USSR would be easy).
But once Stalin put a competent general in charge, and the army reorganized and trained for the operation, they knocked Finland out relatively quickly. The same could happen here, but only if Putin puts someone competent in charge, instead of giving the rank to the highest bidder.
