The story of the tower of Babel might have been inspired by the collapse of Babylon and the loss of the knowledge on how to read Cuneiform, though. Canaanite culture seems to have been heavily inspired by Babylonian and Egyptian culture, which was as mythical to them as it was to us. E.g. the flood came from the Epic of Gilgamesh, Moshe was originally an Egyptian character, the Exile was actually the vaguely remembered time when Egypt rules Canaan, etc.
We think of the "ancient times" as one blob, but even in "ancient times", people had their own "ancient times", and with poor record-keeping, those times was less known to them than ancient Egypt is to us. The Sahara used to be grassland 10K years ago; we have to this day no idea who inhabited the complex under Göbleki Tepe. I think it's also at least plausible that Atlantis actually existed and was destroyed somehow, and that Plato's claim to have learned about it in Egyptian records was actually true. This is to say nothing of what happened 20 or 50 thousand years ago.
