There isn't necessarily a "reason" for every biological feature. Chinese could just as easily ask why do white people have wide eyes? Eyes happened, they needed to appear in SOME kind of form, if anything the fact that we see different shape eyes is actually evidence that there probably isn't much evolutionary pressure at all on the shape of eyes which is why random variants can survive.
