In 2006, I saw a whole family get blown up in their home in Chaplanay, south of Kandahar. I held their dying daughter in my arms as she coughed up blood and died.
They told us some taliban were hiding out in this hamlet, it was like a dense city block with a bunch of small houses. I was firing mortar, and they just told us to hit every house one by one. I spent 3 hours just blowing up the whole block. Afterwards we went down to clear out the buildings. And guess fucking what, we never found the targets. Just 23 dead people, mostly children.
I killed them all just for no reason other than that I got wrong info.
I've never told anyone about this but I still think about it all the time.
