I'd say it's got less to do with cost and more to do with pride. Putin unironically faps to the idea of the Soviet Union to the point he considered the breakup a bigger geopolitical catastrophe than both world wars.
Besides that, he's used to power. So like most dictators. He hates when someone else has power over him. It would be easier to kill him than it would be for him to swallow his pride and accept defeat.
Not really. They're seeking ways to pump more men through the grinder. Youth corps analogous to ROTC. Vocational school students. Riot cops. Mercenaries. Syrians. They don't see a sunk cost, they see a temporary shortage of meat.

So are people in russia freaking out yet? I mean, the majority have to know whats going on at this point right?
They might suspect the government isn't saying everything, but they rejoice at the thought of Russian boots going through Ukrainian Nazi skulls. They're still working under the impression all forces that oppose the Russian incursion are "ultra-nationalist partisans."

Where are you? Somewhere away from the front I hope.

Most of them don't care for it or mildly support it. Even the sanctions haven't affected them that much or so they claim youtube.com/watch?v=3yKJFysG2i0

Ukraine already declined the offer. If they were going to do anything they have no reason to not just be doing it now.

It depends, but unless you're near Mariupol or Lviv, they probably aren't focused on you right now. Trying to get a Media Moment "win" out of the former, and "softening" training and supply facilities in the latter.
