So this seems like the future of nuclear weapons lies in boomers firing right off the coast, right? Well, no. The future of nuclear strategy may actually lie in space. Back in the 1980's there was a project proposed called Brilliant Pebbles. It was never implemented because the Soviets were falling apart and congress was winding down on military spending. But there was greater logistical issues in that we had no launch capacity for something akin to a working Brilliant Pebbles constellation. This has changed. The US suddenly has the capacity needed to implement the Brilliant Pebbles plan, and implement it cheaply and extremely quickly. Further, with the creation of the Space Force this idea has been floated around again. I'll save you a wiki search. Functionally when a missile or rockets (I'm not discussing ATGM's, I mean BIG rockets) launches, American thermal scopes are always aware of the launch. When an ICBM is launched there's even more prominent marker of the launch.
Brilliant Pebbles is a constellation around the entire planet that serve as missile platforms (not nukes, just kinetic kill vessels). Thus, when a launch occurs, the platform fires down their missiles at the incoming ICBM and intercepts it. Killing it. This isn't hypothetical, it's been tested and now we can build it. Once, and if, America begins to throw Brilliant Pebbles stations into orbit they will control space and nullify MAD. You want to launch a spy sat? Too bad. You want to try and launch an ICBM? Too bad. You want to launch your own platforms? Too bad, ours were there first. You want to shoot them down? Too bad, there's thousands and they can intercept your missiles.
Should this occur, America's hegemony over the globe would effectively be secured forever. I am emitting a few things (like DARPA's unmanned ship system that will track boomers by just following them around when they leave harbors), but I'm tired and you'll just have to take my word for it.
