Why? Because China's demographics are in a really bad shape.
Less than 5% of their pop is draftable age and they admitted to overcounting their child bearing population by at least 100mil people.
Its been 25 years since their one-child policy and guess what? 25 years later they are running out of 25 year olds. The chinks are not as good at math as they want you to believe.
The overcounting of 100mio affects especially that age bracket.
And the situation will not improve for 25 years, because gues how long it takes to raise a 25yo!?
Even if every fertile chinese woman would get pregnat right now, they would not be able to turn this trend around, they passed the point of no return.
Why do you think their housing markets collapsed? Because there is nobody left to buy.
China will have HALF the population they have now by 2050, probably even earlier, because they always lie about their numbers.
And most of those left will be old and unable to work or fight.
And they don't have the luxury of filling their ranks with immigrants. Nobody want's to go to china, instead anybody who can leaves, which further exacerbates the problem.
Their lack of people in child bearing age is so bad, they will be out for the next 100 years.
The technical term for this is "fucked".

The korean border regions in Liaoning and Jilin, Tibet, Guangxi, the mongol dominated parts of Inner Mongolia and of course Xinjiang will be the first to go independent.
Most areas outside of the northern plain will turn into a 21st century clusterfuck of warring kingdoms with PLA generals turned warlords trying to nuke each other.
The big coastal cities might try to become city states if they can find someone who keeps them fed.

On populationpyramid.net you can see that 13.8% of the male population is between 15 and 35. You can get below 5% by excluding 30+ year old men and dividing by two because of women, but this exaggerates the seriousness of the situation.

This is on the extreme end of plausibility. The same site shows China less than 10% off their peak by 2050, which is obviously cartoonishly rosy, but to drop 50% would pretty-much require a famine.

This may be true, but it's not a demographic effect, but a "rural population moving into cities" effect. There is a bit of room to accellerate this and obviously a lot of room to reverse it (you can see recent news articles about people choosing to live in farms and make $2/day because they get to stay with their families and not get locked down and at least they have food).

Yes, China is fucked, but it's not as imminenent or catastrophic as you're making it out to be.
