It's pretty simple, actually. NPCs are people without souls. That's really it. So, how do you tell if someone has a soul.
That's also pretty easy. They understand that all humans have rights, including transfolk. They believe in Science. They know that the future is female. They see, acknowledge, and work to rectify white privilege wherever it is found. And just generally they are smarter, more empathetic people than NPCs.

NPCs are followers. People that inevitably end up walking along the path they are told to, whether it hurts them or not. They may have symptoms of the blank stare, but thats not the only tell. The largest tell is the lack of the ability to ask 'why', simply to any question. Maskoids never asked why, they were told why, and that was 'because of covid'. Never thinking deeper about any situations beyond the scope of influence granted by surrounding peers makes you an NPC, because you simply go along with the status quo no matter what
Not only that, but NPC-ism extends itslef as a spectrum, where compliance now has reasons, or not. Not all compliance is wrong, but it truly depends of why they comply. If they dont have a good reason, its safe to assume the person has no individuality or train of thought for themselves.

They don't believe in anything. Our subverted culture doesn't offer anything unified to believe in. Religion is gone. Community trust and belief is gone. Civics education is gone. Their parents didn't instill anything well into them. There's too many ideas out there and they don't know what to believe. They believe nothing. They have no foundation of reality.
Group dynamics are huge. Psych studies show people will deny basic reality if the rest of the group does and they'll be ostracized. This is basically all the establishment does now "Agree with us or you're a Nazi!". But this only goes to a point before it interferes with your foundational beliefs and you say wait a second. Unless you don't have any. Then all you can do is follow the main crowd. That's what you believe in, that's your morality, that's how you gain clarity and security in this confusing world.
