Went from Stockholm to Istanbul by train, stopped at Sofia train station in Bulgaria to change train. This was around 2012. Felt like stepping into a Terminator dystopia. It looked like Soviet Russia 1980. Rude people, filthy food, dirty, no one spoke english and I was threatened into giving some dude money after him showing me where my train departed from (this was not some random dude, but someone employed by the bulgarian railway company, whatever it was called).

Met some spanish dudes that spent a day in Sofia, said it was the worst shithole they ever visitied.

No, it is poor shithole. Has massive brain drain and is full of stinky and smelly gypsies.

Outside of Sofia yes. In fact we have many British groups living here. Knew a bunch. Usually older folks looking for a cheaper standard of living.
That said gypsies are a menace in some regions, so you should know where you are going.

Sofia is our worst city. The only good side is job opportunities.The railway station is a shithole, almost as if we want to keep anyone from coming here :^) We used to push the refugees into that region too.
The reasoning is simple - the old capital of Turnovo was moved to Sofia as it was believed we would reunite with macedonia and Sofia would be in the middle. That didn't happen and the city just grew out of proportion with barely any planning.

How did you buy it?

I think I took example #2, except I stopped in Berlin and not in Frankfurt. Also short stops in Slovakia and Czechia if im not mistaken. If I had to do it again, example #1 looks better. Belgrade was no fun, had to sleep outside on a bench while packs of stray dogs roamed around. Only a hole in the floor as a toilet, fuck that.

I dont know if I would recomend. Trains in Scandinavia and central europe are comfy, but when you get further east and south.... it just went downhill. The worst part was the train from Sofia to Istanbul.

Only a hole in the floor with no toilet paper, no running water, no food or water for purchase even though it was like 30 degrees hot and the train journey took 11 hours or whatever. Im happy I didnt die, kek. The train itself was almost like those trains you see in WW2 movies where they move Jews to Auschwitz.

Istanbul itself was more modern than I expected, but I wouldnt take a train there again.

In Czechia they locked the entire train station at 21, and I arrived like 20:50. No toilet for me, and I REALLY had to take a shit. I had to sit outside in the grass, where there was piles of shit everywhere on the ground, in complete darkness, and try to shit without the patrolling guards with german shepherd dogs hearing me.

In Serbia they banged our door in the middle of the night and yelled PASSAPORTA CONTROL with some barking dog. Threw some Moroccan dude of the train, and forced everyone else to line up at 03 am in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, to show our passports.
