Croatia has different dialects but the standard language is shtokavian which comes from the grayest area between croatia and serbia. Croats picked it in 19th century, as nationalist awakenings took place, and they wanted to create one south slavic nation, unified as ''Illiyrians''.

You can trace Croats and Serbs as being distinct tribes during their arrival to the Balkans nearly 1500 years ago and even before that in their respective proto-countries in Eastern Europe.
This is basic knowledge regarding slavic history and migrations.

chronologically the kingdom of croatia existed before the kingdom of serbia and serbs basically took the croatian language and changed it a bit for themselves. if anything, serbs are croats in denial and not the other way around.
