Ukraine may be important not just due to NATO expansion and having nukes close to Russia.
Crimea is a very strategic location, home to important Naval Base Sevastopol which links Russia to the Mediterranean. It was annexed by Russia in 2014. If Ukraine gets built up more w weapons they could threaten Crimea and Sevastopol. Another possible reason is that Ukraine has a gas pipeline that they receive like 3B per year in transit fees and Russia tried to bypass that w Nordstream 1 and 2. US wanted to stop Nordstream 2 so that Russia is not the main supplier to Germany and Europe. Ukraine would lose billions in transit fees and the Bidens are getting kickbacks on that money.

Whem the US broaches the baltics about moving rheir abti ballsitic defense system there tbe Russians threatened to move shprt range nukes to their exclave in Kalingrqad.

Because the entirety of the Baltic States are all within range of Kaliningrad's IADS bubble and ballistic/cruise missile range. Also if they get uppity, Russia and Belarus can cut them off from the rest of Europe by taking over the Suwalki Gap. Ukraine on the other hand is huge and if NATO missiles were to be stationed there, then they could reach Moscow in 5 minutes.
