Depends on where and when. Peasants in peace time usually didn't do terribly bad because they were mostly autonomous. Unless there was a drought or some kind of environmental disaster or unbalance, they lived perfectly comfy lives as farmers. They wouldn't even notice changes in governance depending on how remotely they lived.

The medieval period was probably the greatest period of libertarianism in human history. Most of the bad things we associate with the Middle Ages (bad teeth, poor hygiene, crowded cities, overbearing nobility) were actually from later centuries, after the medieval period. Actual medieval life was quite good up until the 1300’s when overpopulation started to kick. Just imagine a very AnCap sort of life. If you were a peasant freeman (as opposed to a serf) you could basically do whatever you wanted; you just had to get the stamp of approval from your local lord, most likely a baron or a knight. Obviously, no modern medicine or internal heating or cars, but apart from that, not all that bad.
