Do you known any Russian? Start with learning the Cyrillic alphabet, then start learning individual words (nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc) and know the pronunciation. Then focus on the grammar. You'd be better off learning Russian. Many people in Ukraine speak Russian (this is less true in west Ukraine).

Yeah I get that, most young people in many places understand at least some English but everybody appreciates making an effort. I would also suggest learning some basic Russian like the other guy said, despite current hostilities people shouldn't mind since you're a foreigner, plus it could be useful if you ever go to the rest of the old soviet sphere

Many Ukrainians speak English and you will have better luck with Russian anyway. At least whoever speaks Ukrainian will most likely speak English too, it's Russian-speaking crowd who are illiterate.
I wonder if this is just Ukraine’s old systems being put to excellent use now that their air defense systems operators have some experience or if their new systems given by the west have already been put to use.
