Afghanistan is a mountainous area on the other side of the planet where the Taliban could hide and wait to strike at their convenience. They gained territory every year after the invasion. Ukraine is a flat plain on the border with Russia it's not comparable. Once Russia takes Ukrainian territory it's over all they can do is protest.
