People really don’t understand what marxist Leninism was. They think it was about making a fair or equal society. It was not.
It was a complete revolution in thought. They put forward ideals that seem utterly nonsensical in retrospect but in their minds they were building a new world that looked nothing like traditional society. They explicitly rejected liberal conceptions of the State. They claimed Rule of Law was a bourgeois concept to be done away with. They believed in the scientific superiority of a collectivized society free of a capitalist class seen as parasitic. Basically they thought they could make the West’s industrial machine without the industrialists. Instead that prosperity that went to the Western Plutocrats would go to the whole society and create a sort of Utopia. It was a millenarian cult. Part of their vision was the faith in the tabula rasa, the blank slate. They believed that humans were essentially neutral entities at birth that could be programmed by society to serve whatever interests the society found suitable. For those born before the revolution that meant they were programmed to be regressive, reactionary, capitalistic, liberal, fascistic, bourgeois, etc.
The implication was that the vast majority of society was a net drag who would constantly be in conflict with the Revolution by their ingrained second nature. The solution was reeducation or in most cases liquidation.
The mass purges of vast swaths of society were simply the birth pains of the Revolution. These were deprecated humans who only served to slow down the inevitable march of progressed towards a fully socialist world order. And once that was achieved a New Socialist Man would be born without regressive concepts. At that point the state would dissipate as the natural inclinations of these New Men simply operated the machinery of communist society without any need of enforcement or oversight.
