You don't understand geopolitics. NATO is supposed to be dominated by US with Europe as its junior partner. I was wondering why NATO declined Russia's application to join. The real reason is that Americans don't want Russian influence in NATO. Think about it: should the Russian has the role of secretary-general of NATO or should it have the role of supreme allied commander of Europe? If Russia is to be the role of secretary-general (which rotated between all European country) it would be fine since it means Russia is subordinated to US, but this is definitely not what Russia wanted. 2. If Russia is allowed to rotate with US as the supreme allied commander of Europe, it wouldn't make any sense as the supreme allied commander of Europe also command American troops on top of all NATO troops
Which means that if NATO is to allow Russia in, a renegotiation and reform within the NATO is needed. With Russia as a part of Europe, other European countries will demand bigger role inside NATO and not just America along having the veto power. This change in power dynamic is not what the Americans wanted.
In addition to this, NATO needs an external enemy for it to exist, Russia is the most convenient target. China is not a good target as it is in East Asia and most Europeans has no interest in making enemy with China. What America did was actually brilliant. Now jump back to current situation. With Russia provoked, NATO actually justified its existence and solidifying American's grip in Europe. Why do you think Germany was buying oil from Russia prior to this conflict? Are they dumb? No, they are trying to pull Russia in to "The West" by cooperation and to reduce American influence. Now with Russian oil cut off and alternative has yet to be found, Germany's position is weaken and Russia will forever not be "The West".

Hold for as long as possible and take as many Russians down with them. It could drag on for quite some time though; they're dug in on excellent defensive terrain (allegedly) with substantial stockpiles of weapons. I doubt Russia can spare enough forces from elsewhere to take the city by force. That means a siege, which means starving out a group of fanatics who would much rather die than surrender and have very few qualms about fucking up civilians who get in their way.
