People talk about Article 5 like it means escalation to a hot Global war instantly, in reality probably the first thing that would happen would be everyone going to maximum alert and sending an ultimatum to cease hostilities and starting to move troops around followed by negotiations/conventional conflict/ a mix of both depending on the situation.

So yes, they would, because not doing it fucking breaks the entire alliance wide open permanently, completely upends world politics and makes every member state far worse off in the short and long run.

More realistic situation where a country is attacked and NATO doesn't respond is if something insane happens like North Korea completely nukes the south into not existing or something and reacting with a nuclear strike would be pointless and probably also start WWIII, then the cold equation makes it make sense to just move on as reaction doesn't help anyone and will make everyone's position worse
