The only problem is that China/India/Russia/Brazil/etc do not trust each other either. So they will have to create a settlement system that's trusted, likely a commodity based one. It could be stuff like a basket of energy or food that can be redeemed by each country. Like if China needed food it could exchange it's BRICS currency for 100m tons of rice from India or Brazil could redeem it's currency for oil from Iran or whatever.
Basically they would have to have commodity reserves of relatively non-perishable goods that could be demanded in exchange. Because none of those governments want a gold standard because it's too restrictive on government policy.
