The only thing that more modern squad automatic weapons have on it is optics compatibility
There is an upgrade package for it that has a picatinny rail for optics
Worst case scenario you could weld one on
Even without optics it's no more "outdated" than anything that was issued in the early 2000s
Also, generally, a "heavy machinegun" denotes a .50 cal when talking about nato equipment, which would be far to heavy to carry
