The dumber you are, the more effective that brainwashing is. And look how dumb the average person is around you. Do you see why its so effective? None of them will likely ever be smart enough to question things around them.
"Why would they do that, though?" you might ask. That's an intelligent, pertinent question. The answer will blow your mind, and likely take you a long time to accept, because it seems so ridiculous at first.
