Putin thought they have a deal the the EU for Yanukovich to step down and hold an election to ease political tension in the country. The deal was signed and Ukraine police was ordered to stand down. The next day, the US bypassed the EU to order the coup with the help of their Nazboi army and the rest was history. Nuland even said “fuck the EU” for that.

Same how in Belarus they essentially annexed it or how in Kazahstan they killed Russian unfriendly opposition under the guise of "western color revolutions".
The maidan was just few students that started to go home on day 2 until Yanukivich brought in OMON and Russia brought violent actors.
