there are two critical problems with this thinking 1. as long as russia has access to large markets like china and india, they are not cut off from global trade. the global ostracization is dependent on being able to truly cut them off but actually doing this to the fullest requires decoupling from china, which is suicide for the US economy the US strategy is depending entirely on short-term pain inflicted by alternatives to the dollar being difficult to quickly and widely implement. if russia at all does not get beaten down completely by it, even if they have to adopt total war managed economy by the state to supply the war effort until they can produce alternative channels, the US gambit here loses
that's not to mention that europe is too dependent on russia's energy trade. they will suffer unimaginably if they cut it off (germany, the cornerstone of the EU, sources like 70% of its energy from russia) and russia is able to continue profiting this way and supply itself. this gambit fails unless everyone is all-in, and that's massively destructive
2. it assumes economic sanctions do not cross red lines for retaliation no matter how stringent they are. this same stupid thinking was how we invoked pearl harbor (and back then, same as now, one wonders how much this was known to intentionally provoke attack) the difference here is russia is stronger than japan in that they can cause serious damage if backed into a corner. if sanctions gambit DOES work and russia does somehow face imminently broken logistics, that does not necessarily mean surrender. that could mean a wild raise of the stakes by threatening doomsday if sanctions are not broken, and then the gamble is how much balls we have and how much we trust countermeasures
