Relative incompetence mostly at the start which may cost them victory. Pretty sure it's already impossible for them complete all of their objectives but they can still get out with some kind of victory. Hopefully sanctions will stay it's the least they can do because no one will bring Putin to the Hague no matter how many more civilians get massacred by Russians and how many cities will be left in complete ruins. The more we know about the scale of the destruction the bigger the international pressure. Of course some governments for example in Germany wouldn't have problems with continuing business as usual but the pressure from the population is on them and if oil prices reach stable levels after a few more agreements with South America and the Middle East the practical reasons to go back to the old system will be gone as well.
