I honestly think the Russian economy and people can't take it. They're not in a war as a country they're in a special operation. Casualties aren't accepted by their family as brave soldiers defending the homeland or brave soldiers spreading communism. There no realistic propagandist backing for this war. Mostly because Putin for some reason decided to Invade and then make Propaganda you usually do it the other way around.
This isn't a WW2 Style war were you can start your factories and chuck out Tanks and design new vehicles and adapt to warfare. Modern war is too fast and casualties are not accepted. Not with a population that isn't even replacement rate no matter the size of the country. And not with an economy that has a spoiled western lifestyle in the capitals suddenly asked to go into restrictive war economies.
Ukraine because of the propaganda has won the heart and minds of it's people. They'll fight even after they lost as insurgents and partisans. Russia does no have the capacity to keep Ukraines territory occupied with it's current economy or propaganda machine.
Theres no acceptable way to deal with partisans in todays world except the WW2 tactics of executing everyone. This is literally not allowed today and if Russia does it and it comes out and obviously it will with all the smartphones and internet everywhere. They're positioning themselves for North Korea 2 a vassal of the Chinese Empire.
Putin needs some sort of exit strategy that leaves the current regime in place and makes agreement with it that it disarms, never joins nato, nato stays the way it is now with it's weapons and Crimea and the 2 republics go to Russia.
The only question in this war is how does Russia lose and pretend it wins. Because it can't actually conquer a country 1/3 of it's size by population.
