Other oldfags may recall we used to have a search engine that was fast, quite effective and largely unfiltered.
It seemed impossible that anyone would ever compete, forget surpass them. Then they decided to abandon true search and instead switched over to curated result sets. You could, of course, pay to have your site up top. Search was gradually minimized.
New player enters, fast, search returned an actual search. The first company was Yahoo and Google smashed them.
