Personally I disagree with you. While you make a good point that an animal is incapable of experiencing "love" in the same way as a human, I do not there is anything wrong with this as long as you love the animal and the animal "loves" you back even if it is the direct result of a survival mechanism based on their reliance on you as their sole provider and caretaker.
With that being said, I hereby move to classify all female humans in a relationship as "pets."

from my vegan perspective all pet ownership is wrong. animals aren't objects to be used for human entertainment, companionship, etc.
You take an animal from it's natural environment, sterilize it, feed it an unnatural diet made up of the offcuts from the industrial animal food industry, not allow it to express any natural behaviours, mate, live a dignified life free from ownership by another species. and you do this over generations and generations creating these mutant breeds that can barely breathe and have severe health problems.
