Once you have enough saved to cover insurance deductible, six month emergency fund, and have your 401k and IRA maxed, you're fine. At this point I've realized it was largely my own fault, but shit is so fucked financially right now that it's hard to see a way out of this trap of a lifestyle. He's broke, and I'm debt free with two paid off properties. He never learned how to be poor and then keep that mindset when he wasn't. Many such cases.

That being said and done, not having money will create a fair number of problems.
The shitty part about Ireland is that rent takes up usually 50% of your take home income. Even then, saving for a house is impossible given the prices increase annually. But most rent is higher than what you would ever pay in mortgage+insurance+taxes+upkeep. Wages here are also shit and taxes are high, so that doesn't help.
Forget the whole 3x your rent thing and just go for it. It’s what I did and eating out less is totally worth it. Unless you live in a high cost of living area, then you’re probably screwed.

I am moving to America and already have my personal finances basically nailed down. Offer signed and such already. I've run income tax calculators for the state I'll be in and even with a 401k max I'll still have 5k take home per month. More than enough for rent, bills, etc. I'll likely be able to invest about 25k annually towards retirement with money left over. My apartment is also walking distance to work and the grocery store. Ireland is a horrible place for those who want to achieve something.
