What Russia has the power to potentially do, even if it isn't permanent, is to effectively cut off all of the world's oil East of Israel, because the United States no longer has a significant enough ground presence in the Middle East to stop them from doing that. We may control the water ways, but any disruption to any one of those three chokepoints (Egypt can make it look like an accident if you remember the Evergreen ship getting it's dumbass stuck for a few weeks) can cause massive panic and gas prices to shoot up to the $15-$20 dollar range in no time. Our economy craters, gas shortages start kicking in, and civil unrest skyrockets to the point that it makes the 2020 BLM Summer of Chaos look like Woodstock.
