Is this why Russian tanks explode so spectacularly?
Is this why Russian tanks explode so spectacularly?
Just remove the gun and add extra armor. Replace it with Javelins
Only if they point the other direction.
If they all point inwards, then the explosion of one shot is perfectly balanced out by the explosion of the opposite shot. What is dangerous about it through is that it creates a super-dense metal ball in the middle that could possibly simply fall through the floor of the tank.
In the older Russian tanks the crew literally sits on top of the fuel and ammunition. That's why they are usually burned to ash after a good hit.
Yes. With a manual loader you can keep the ammo behind bulkheads with blowout panels that can offer some protection to the crew compartment if it detonates. With the autoloader if the ammo goes the whole tank goes off like a bomb.
the amount of armor needed against anti-tank weapons would render the tank immobile
the T72-onward circular autoloader is literally colloquially called the Carousel of Death because it sits unprotected AROUND the tank's crew.
The propellant alone, without the explosive round is enough to kill all inside
unprotected ammunition storage.
donut on the bottom blows up and send the turret into orbit.
This is the purpose of a carousel, furthermore if the carousel spins fast enough the blast is directed outwards.
And you laughed at leopards having semi-exposed projectile storage. My sides.
its insensitive munitions. it literally wont explode
>Carousel
THERE. IS. NO. SANC. TUARY!
I
The reason their tanks explode is because they have an automatic feeding mechanism.
Because of this feed the explosive rounds are more exposed so in the event of a breech, the rounds usually light the fuck up and the whole thing goes boom.
In US tanks the loading of the gun is still done manually, and the ammunition store is in the back of the tank behind like 6" of steel. There is a door that opens and the gunner takes a round out of the store, and the store then seals up again.
In US tanks in the event of a breech, the tank actually as the ability to eject the ammunition store so that it does not ignite and explode or its not as likely.
Has this war proven tanks are now obsolete? America got awoy with it because the Taliban didn't have javelins
But they're so cool. Can't we just keep them around for a little bit longer?
Depends. It highlighted the need for active defence systems like Shtora against a peer enemy in terms of man portable anti-tank weapons. I think they need something that can detonate fuses away from the tank. Like a jammer of some sort but that actually triggers fuses and causes them to detonate.
Kek.
Oh shit so that's why the tops get blown off like that. I thought they'd store the shells underneath the turret further inside the tank
It's called a carrousel yet the crew is experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions.
Alternating between anxiety and depression.
I don't know anything about russias active protection systems on tanks, but it seems to be doing jackshit if they're on there too
didnt u guys charge at tanks with horses? and ur here taking the piss out off a country that actually develops its own tech ? kekw what fucking time line are we living in ?
Nah, they should have counter measures that intercept incoming missiles. Tanks were considered obsolete after WWII as well, and designs changed to make them much faster but almost completely unarmoured. It circled back around to being heavily armoured in the 80s with new materials that could stop AT munitions again.
It certainly has shown that tanks have more-limited war capabilities than in previous times. The days of being able to steamroll an enemy with tanks are over unless you're invading a country with no real defenses.
reactive armor, also it's not only russian tanks.
Only some T-90s even have an active system. Ivan put all his chips into reactive armor.
plasma jets are very good at igniting that propellant.
Russia can't afford or develop that. Israel has the trophy system
T-14 was meant to have strong active defences, but they have about 5 of them.
I'd say only 2 of them run on top of that. Those engines keep breaking down.
Why can't they (or anyone) build an autoloader with a reinforced door between storage and loading mechanism?
Use a fucking 6-axle industrial robot, if necessary.
Well aren't weapons like the NLAW and javelin specifically designed to fool reactive armour. They release a burst first which sets it off then plunge in? I would have hoped they would realise that
Not surprised.
What's the name of the Russian system?
