I hate to say something intelligent here, but we're a really young species that has almost died out before (went down to 40-5000 individuals after a big volcano fucked the atmosphere). Intelligence barely helped us then.
Know who survived just fine? Sharks and trees. Dumb as fuck and been around millions of years.
I doubt we're unique because the universe is so large, but the chance we'll ever encounter intelligent life is infinitesimal. Intelligence just isn't that important when it comes to survival.
