A few years ago I had late Stage 3 colon cancer. It spread to my lymph nodes but not my other organs yet.
After emergency surgery, I was give a choice - live 6 months without chemo, or 12-18 with chemo. I took the chemo.
In total, I spent about a month in the hospital (including 2 weeks in ICU after surgery), and had 6 months of chemo.
Total bills were $450,000+
My out of pocket total was maybe $20,000
Insurance paid the rest
What if I didn't have $20,000? Then shame on me.
