No, I assure you, some literally do not have thoughts. I came to this conclusion last night with someone I know personally. Literally nothing going on up there. They walk among us - you’d never know until you try to have a below-surface-level conversation and realize they have no ability to contribute. They don’t ask themselves questions, they don’t analyze anything, they don’t think about the significance of anything, they’re not able to understand the concept of implications at all. It’s quite sad, actually..

They tend to be more animal then man. You have to realize NPCs are everywhere, and many historical figures probably were NPCs too. They don't think, but under the right circumstances they end up in places you wouldn't expect. Usually, this means they'll stick to society no matter how rotten it is or how unhinged they end up behaving because of it. Thinking more like an animal also translates to Any Forums. Whenever you see posters sperging about genes, dominance and such things, generally treating men like lab rats, you'll know you are dealing with an NPC. Normal people are baffled by such considerations, to them it's obivious there's more to humans, their inner monologue is proof of it. NPCs don't have it, so for them being a rat makes more sense then being human.

It's hard to give a percentage, since they also seem to have increased in time. I'd say around 70-80% of the general population.

Their animal tendencies are under control so that they don't damage humans. This is not easy to achieve. Rome got close to it, but have no idealized vision: there were NPCs then too. In general, a saner society (more right wing) seems to inherently defuse them, but there is no real solution.

Hard to say. My answer would be a soft "no" with possible rare exceptions. It's usually an innate trait, or at least if it isn't the causes aren't obivious.
