Commercial real estate is valued based on how much money a property can make (along with other factors, but this is one of the biggest if not the biggest).
This is called an appraisal.
If a building can not atttract tenants, it can not create income. Work from home completely obsoletes traditional commercial office space. thus, the appraised value of these useless commercial spaces is appraised lower.
Real estate taxes are based on the appraised value of a property, so less value = less taxes.
uesless gubbermint leeches are putting pressure on companies to return to offices because they will either have to raise taxes to compensate for the lost tax revenue (pissing off all real estate owners/developers/pretty much everyone), or receive less tax revenue.
Usually commercial spaces take years to convert to residential, so cities are potentially facing years of large amounts unusable building space occupying downtown areas. my guess is these areas will be inhabited by the homeless and renovations will be put on hold as crime and raw materiel prices skyrocket.
