Germany closed their nuclear plants due to incessant bitching from the ecologists that went all the way back to the 70's, no new nuclear plant has been built since the 90's. The decision suspend the life extension of existing nuclear plants by Merkel after Fukushima was just her scraping some more votes, but nuclear was dead way before then.
They really shot themselves on the foot as nuclear plants were replaced by coal and gas, and now they've bled to death after their feel-good decision could mean WW3. But who could've known, right?
