Are they really the next superpower? Or is it all just paper mache and smoke and mirrors? Can China really be a leader in science and technology and a world leader globally equal to the US? They have severe demographic problems, rampant corruption, extreme economic inequality, an enormous real estate bubble, environmental pollution, water scarcity, reliance on foreign imports for energy resources, and little or no allies on the world stage. On the other hand, they have the fastest growing economy in the world, rapidly expanding tech sector (space exploration, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, etc.), more STEM graduates than all OECD countries combined, a strong national identity, a highly competent ruling class.

Their country has a deadline in that their population is aging. One Chinese is not worth the same as one Westerner, so even if you say they'll still have hundreds of millions of people it's not quite the same as over a billion.
