Russia is going into a major depression right now and the ruble is worth less than 1 cent. Being frozen out of the entire global market and breadlines in the streets is not 'Russia coming out unscathed'. In Russia this isn't popular.
Also China isn't on 'team Russia', it's on team China. They're not going to get themselves bogged down in Putin's landgrab attempt, which is why Xi is already calling for a ceasefire and restricting Russian purchases in Chinese banks.

Russia is a declining power and always has been since way before even the fall of the USSR. Putin doesn't even think or want to restore the so called Russian empire because there is no empire to begin with. There is no ideology. There is nothing. He's merely trying to hold the maintain the relevancy of his petrodollar state against the increasingly adversarial west. He never wanted actually to be an enemy of the west. He was forced to.
