Ultimately, plausible deniability (even when they actually ARE completely innocent) is what can save Russia from annihilation. If they create a realistic photo, it won't be shown anywhere. Most people have weak stomachs and newspapers aren't going to show a photo of someone with half their face missing on the front page. This defeats the purpose of making such photos in the first place.
Yes but with the propaganda machine that the west has, even if Russia did everything flawlessly, nobody would believe them, so why bother. I wish there was any retribution and people realized they were being played like fools, but that will never happen, because it requires some actual effort from the masses to delve into the details of the conflict. Nobody is going to do that, even more, nowadays we are being bombarded with so much information that we take most of it as true. Just think about it, some news article says that some kids legs were blown off by Somali pirates in Yuba and if you don't know much about Africa you'll think "oh well that's terrible" and never question whether it is true or not. Same is happening with Ukraine.
