You can have groups push deeper than the rest trying to seize undefended cities, betting they will get and be able to consolidate their supply line before the enemy can gather enough troops there to cut them.
It's a gamble that tend to work well if you have good enough info on enemy's position.

Front lines moving slowly and coherently was only a thing during trench warfare.
