You get maybe 2 saves per level on PS1 if you find the crystals, it's brutal. I try not to use walkthroughs unless I'm really buggered, had to look 3 or 4 times so far through India and Nevada. Some of the routes are so daft that it'd take hours to figure out if you don't have a little help.

it took me 6 months to finish the original game and I did have a peek at a friends walkthrough book when I got truly stuck,
