Exports of oil and gas are the only thing keeping the russian economy afloat right now. From a cash flow perspective, germany is directly financing the war through rouble purchases of gas.
Russia can't turn around and sell gas to china, because there are few LNG sea ports and no pipeline to the east.
It's in the EU's interest to hobble Russia even further by extracting themselves from the testicle clamp that is Nord Stream 1.
