China has always been in it for the long game. In the next decade the standard of living will supersede Taiwan, which will make it easier to slowly annex. It also helps that China doesn’t have a manic leader who feels it necessary to grab up everything with military force.

Worst case scenario, China embarrasses itself on the world stage - revealing a 3rd world paper tiger masquerading as a "global power."

This would be catastrophic and I'm sure even the slightest possibility of this outcome coming to fruition is enough to keep Chinese officials up at night.
