All peak oil means is that oil will get harder to find and more expensive to produce over time with a small energy return on investment for each barrel. Considering we live in a finite world, I don’t know how this is even disputable, bell curve production outputs happen with every mineable commodity. Nobody freaks out when I mention peak copper, peak zinc or peak silver are coming, but mention peak oil and everybody loses their collective minds.

That's because every modern good we produce is done so with oil. All of our capital from agriculture to zinc farming are using machines that generate energy through the kinetic motion powered by combustion. Metals were the old resources used to create tools and weapons, they also had peaks and declined civilizations in their time. However, I feel as though a lot of people try to drive this as a doomsday scenario reminiscent to Mad Max which it isn't. An accurate portrayal of a world without oil is the first act of "City of God", which is a bunch of mixed ethnic people that live in hovels where murder and theft is normalized into their communities.
