Tbh, I think that's a big part of it. She was basically just a normal tomboy until she hit puberty.
I also imagine that the whole 'passive dad and aggro-mom' home life - which a lot of Americans grow up with - does a lot of damage to girls. Plus, the pornization of society confuses prudish teen girls ('I don't want to act like that, must mean I'd be better off as a guy').
