Simple, in 2009 NATO was on better terms with Russia than ever. That's Obama-era "reset" with Russia, which was:
* Giving a green light to Germany-Russia "Eurasia" project,
* Fucking up the middle east to prevent mediterranean pipelines from being built,
* Dismantling NATO's northern sea fleet and pivoting to the Pacific,
* Cancelling stuff in Poland and Baltics (e.g. anti-missile shield) in exchange for not militarizing Belarus.
All in exchange for taking the side of US in the US-China conflict.

Everything was in Russia's favour in 2009, all they needed to do to divide Europe between Germany and themselves was do nothing for 20 years. Nothing else. And they still fucked up.

They founded the CSTO afterwards as their own counterforce to NATO which the NATO nation's now claim is the attempt at recreating the Sowjet Union.
They made Russia not the promise to encroach on them.
Which NATO broke, when called out on it they claimed Russia is the one lying and continued to position themselves closer and closer to Russia.

This is not a defensive movement, but placing your troops in a long run game for a final decisive strike.

NATO is a defensive alliance between (mostly) democratic countries that was formed in response to the former soviet union. Russia has supposedly reformed itself into a capitalist autocracy ran by oligarchic families.

However, there is an issue. Many former soviets still exist in Russia's governance, military and politics. Namely head of state Vladimir Putin, was in fact a former KGB agent. The aforementioned organization is suspected of having developed a subversion strategy to harm western democracies ability to run and organized.

Seriously- ask yourself how many grass roots political parties in Europe and the U.S have a clear and tangible end goal and practical or utilitarian political policies backing them up? Environmentalism is a great example, most environmentalists are uneducated and ignorant and end their research after seeing a documentary on climate change or watching CNN for several years. That's not a realistic collection of party members with a clear and realistic end goal that can be applied without economic harm to the united states. No attempt at vital research into ecological webs, pollution and the health of the ecosphere and the oceans, and no attempt at researching into economics and technology which could help ease the pain or outright get rid of any setbacks that an environmentalist policy would have on the environment.

This same situation plays out repeatedly with other political organizations. Democrats, liberals, atheists, homosexuals, transgenders, etc etc.

"defund the police" comes to mind. The green new deal comes to mind, none of the agenda's they advocate for are realistic or practical applications of their ideology. It's all just dead end ideologies, destruction and bullshit that doesn't actually go anywhere or have a clear end-goal world view. Same for globalism, globalists fail to recognize that globalism is an exclusively anti-human governmental policy and a one world government would fall flat.

I could honestly have seen NATO either disbanding or scaling down at least in Europe if Putin didn’t chimp out and waited a few years. My best guess is Putin feels he’s running out of time as he gets older and wants to either set up a new stage for Russia in the world or to secure his legacy. Stupid egotism either way.
