Yes. Putin sent some tanks there, but they mostly just guarded government buildings and infrastructure to free up Kazakh military and police for the actual crackdown.
It was pretty harsh with people getting shot in the streets and in their homes. The country has been pretty much a police state since then. Not as bad as Russia yet though.
The Kazakh economy is very much tied to Russian economy, so it also got heavily affected by the sanctions. The prices of everything have skyrocketed and that obviously makes the people unhappy and nervous.
Tokayev (the president) knows this, so he's sort of sitting on the fence as to not incite another revolt (which he might be unable to put down without Russian support). He refused to recognize the DNR and LNR and he refused to support the "operation" with Kazakh army (altough he didn't condemn it either).
Seems like a dangerous game he's playing, but he's in a hard spot, as are the people of Kazakhstan. I can't see things going well for anybody there to be honest.
