The idea isn't to attack the armor with it, it's to stuff them in air vents, exhausts, and other areas like so. They can't use the vehicle if it's insufferable to be in.

Basically this. I've even seen it in old WW2 training videos on how to deal with tanks. You hide because tanks are almost all blind spots and you sabotage it by throwing a grenade into the vision port or throw a cocktail. Burning gas will get into all the cracks and could even set the crew on fire.

They have fire extinguishers. If you manage to set the engine on fire the fuel might be ignited and you might temporarily disable the tank but you are not going to be able to get close anyways so don't bother.
