Because Japan focuses on itself while America is a global empire that invest outwards instead of inwards. I mean look at our military budget. If I was president I would severely cut our outwards influence and focus inwards and the country would flourish. Although that leaves a vacuum for power hungry nations which means no matter which way you go its a lose lose for the US.

more homogenous leading to lack of ethnic/racial conflict on a wide scale high iq intelligent population that picks and chooses elements to borrow from the west and adapts them successfully to their traditional culture wealth and prosperity (partially thanks to american investment post-wwii, but also because of many innovative companies and developments in tech science etc) more conservative cultural traditions and sense of historical roots, connection with the land, family heritage that give them more attachment to the land healthier diet, less fattening food and stricter cooking and agricultural standards vs us which is full of monsanto chemical garbage ruled by conservative party for almost 50 years with little interruption, allows for stability, but isnt overly authoritarian or dictorial which allows for free expression
its not perfect. theres long hour work culture, hikkikimoris, and aging population issues. compared to the us its very clean, safe, orderly, and more exciting. its modern but traditional, a good balance.
