Saboteurs also don't make sense since why would a saboteur blow their cover just to shoot up some random car instead of, you know, sabotaging infrastructure.

To show them your humanity. Journalists are under no illusion that they will not be shot at in a war zone. They can do this while still holding it to be unacceptable that they should be targeted. It is a part of their job to be canaries in a coal mine.
