They didn't achieve/maintain air superiority, they failed to capture Hostomel airfield which would've allowed them to land more forces/supplies, the southern push failed to take Kherson (or any other crossing over the Dnieper), and what little logistics there was in country had no escort. All of this led to the clusterfuck they're in now.
